CONFESSIONS OF A FORMER NEWS BIMBO
FROM AN E-MAIL TO DAN O'DAY:
Ten years ago, I was really angry with you, because you said some
pretty insulting things about one of my airchecks, which was included
in a package spotlighting the Dayton, Ohio morning show on which
I was working at the time. I believe you said I sounded like a
"bimbo."
That really ticked me off, as I was a very serious journalist,
forced into the stupid and demeaning role of "Morning
Show News Bimbo."
I wrote you a scathing letter, but thought the better of it, and
trashed it before sending it. Then, a few months later, I read
an article that you wrote, which advised bright women such as
myself to get the heck out of dead-end "News Bimbo"
positions, even if we were on a top-rated radio station (which
I was at the time), and go to a smaller station where we could
have our own shows.
Even though the next job (DJ and Promotions Director at a small
station) was the absolute worst job I've ever had in my
entire life, it did indeed break me out of the "News
Bimbo" box.
I had almost resigned myself to being stuck in the "News Bimbo" box forever, when I read your article and
took your advice to heart. It wasn't an easy path to follow,
but it's certainly been interesting and rewarding. (Current
Market) is a great city, and I feel incredibly lucky to be working
and living here.
I was inspired to write you this "Thank You"
letter, after reading your comments in the Rock column of the most
recent issue of R&R. You made some really good points that
I hope radio managers nationwide will take to heart.
