A personal message from Dan O'Day:

Dan O'Day
If you're a radio programmer, this might shock you:
You don't need to figure out everything for yourself.
Instead of constantly trying to "wing it," why not learn
directly from one of the world's smartest, most
successful radio programming consultants?

Here Are Some of The Questions That I Asked
Radio's Most Influential Programming
Consultant — Straight Answers, No B.S!

  • What is the #1 quality you look for in a program director?

  • Other than the obvious things like compelling, relevant jocks and
playing the right music, what is the best way to turn P2's into P1's?

  • Regarding on-air delivery, the consensus lately is to be
conversational. How would you define being conversational,
particularly when there's no co-host and you're not doing any
    phoners?

  • How do you coach talent when you're not a very strong air talent
    yourself?

  • Which music programming software do you prefer and why?

  • How are we to create a quality product with a skeleton staff and
    few resources?

  • Why is it that we keep hearing about how local, local, local is the
strength of radio, yet it's not what comes out of the speakers?

  • Will the trend of non-local radio continue?

  • Regarding imaging voices, do you have a rule on how long to use
    them for a station?

  • How often should we change the actual imaging pieces, to remain
    fresh?

  • Many stations use a "loyalty" program thru their websites to
engage listeners. How effective is this as it relates to ratings, and
how much on-air time should be devoted to it?

  • How do we keep the separation between Programming and Sales,
given the global economic situation which no doubt will drive Sales
to sell everything on the station to the detriment of Programming?

  • In today's environment, where is the quality talent that can do
everything we need and still deliver a quality product? And how
can we develop the next generation of listeners and talent?

What a GREAT teleconference! I’ve always had a tremendous amount of respect for both Dan and Mike, and to be able to pick their brains was an invaluable experience. I work for a company that has really taken to the "listener loyalty" programs, with an ultimate goal of taking all the contesting off the air. I was SO glad to hear Mike talk about how it is excluding a large portion of our cume.

I was also really glad to hear Mike talk about programming philosophies and principles that apply to "small market-no budget" radio stations. All too often I’ll go to conferences or be on calls that deal with things that will only work with stations that have real budgets, real staffs, etc. I took away a tremendous amount from this teleseminar.

Great work! Very worthwhile teleseminar, and the price was a steal. I liked the P-1 cume to TSL calculation — very helpful (i.e., 37% of cume must give you 75% of TSL for 'success'). The talent coaching was perhaps most helpful of all — inspiring. I remember clipping Mike's articles out of R&R many years ago and keeping a reference scrapbook; he's still inspiring and helpful!

I typed 27 pages of double spaced notes and didn’t get everything, so I’ll be listening to the mp3 recording to get the rest!

Mike McVay is a mountain of knowledge!

Great stuff, gentlemen. Thank you for taking the time and offering it at a price we “smaller station” PDs can afford ourselves. A lot of great discussion — some of it was refreshing, allowing me to feel that some of my thinking here is not as far off base as upper management may think. Thanks again, Dan and Mike. In this economy – where our travel and training budget is just gone – it's nice to have this alternative.

To get this kind of information, discussion, and instruction for that kind of money makes it the bargain of the year. It was beyond a bargain. It was a gift.
